JOLT is a new homeware brand with product designed and made by Designs in Mind, a rural social enterprise. The designs are created by a diverse group of makers referred through mental health services. 100% of sales revenue goes towards sustaining and developing the work of Designs in Mind.
Ellie was one of our members at Designs in Mind, not a volunteer, who has been working on the first collection of JOLT products.
What were you doing before Designs in Mind and why did you come?
I had a nervous breakdown in 2010. Through talking with my community psychiatric nurse and discussing my interest in making things, she suggested Designs in Mind. I came to visit with her, saw the video and said yes it feels like a place I can come to. I was deadfully shy.
What do you get out of coming to Designs in Mind?
Learning artistic skills and using different mediums. Designs in Mind has brought me out of myself after my breakdown. I have making a lot of friends and I get a lot out of helping other people.
How have you been involved in JOLT?
From the start, from it being an egg when the idea was first developed. I’ve been involved in some of the designing, the colours, construction sewing the napkins, and making prototypes of all the products.
What excites you about JOLT?
What it could become; what the little egg could become. The chain of events, that has happened recently is really excited – getting in to Top Drawer and planning for Not on the High Street and Just because … I’m passionate about it, and I really believe we can take our retail to another level. We have high quality products and people will want to buy them. I love working in a small team with great people who work well together.
Does anything make you nervous about JOLT?
If it doesn’t work! I don’t believe that will happen. It will be amazing. We’ve got to be patient in our expectations even if it is a slow start.
What do you hope JOLT can achieve in the future?
Seeing our products on the high street, in independent retailers across the UK and selling online.
How do you hope to be involved in JOLT in the future?
Dealing with customer orders, purchases from customers as well as contributing to the design and making and helping to come up with new ideas for new products.
